Hair FAQ's

Get your questions answered about common questions relating to hair, our services, products, and more.

Why are their sessions with Balayage services, or going lighter?

The hair is on a spectrum of dark to light. Black hair is a Level 1, while white blonde hair is a 10, and  brunette is anywhere from Levels 3-7. When going lighter we NEED to lift through each level of the hair, so if your hair is a starting level 2 (which is really dark brown), and your goal is a level 9 (pale gold blonde), then the process needs to include levels 3,4,5...until level 9 is accomplished.

A typical balayage can lighten 3-5 levels per session, while foil and on the scalp lightening techniques have the ability to lighten 7+ levels in one session (on virgin hair).

Side note: With balayage it's also important to build up the dimension. These looks depend on it!

How many sessions should I expect?

This depends on your starting canvas (current hair), and visions for your hair. Things that will affect the amount of sessions depends on how dark your hair is starting at, if there is any artificial color present, how light you intend to go, how much dimension is required for the look you want, how course/fine your hair cuticle is, whether the goal is cool or warm toned, and other factors. Your stylist will discuss this with you at your initial consultation.

What is the cost per session?

This is dependent on your independent artist, but is likely $200+

Should I invest in at home care products?

Most definitely! Make sure to ask your artist at your next visit for there specific product recommendations based on your hair type, or check out the product recommendations below!

What if I can't decide what to get, what service to get, or which stylist to choose?

Send us an email at info@thebalayage.studio and let us guide you in the right direction. Just tell us a bit about yourself and your hair concerns, and we'll take it from there!

How should I best prepare my hair for my appointment?

  • Wash your hair the night before or the day of, preferably with a clarifying shampoo. If you have hard water use Malibu C's hard water shampoo and conditioner, which you can purchase in salon.

  • Make sure your hair is fully dried, as this saves us time. if it takes longer then 15 minutes to dry your hair before getting started their will be an additional $15 charged to the service.

  • No messy buns or styling products. Basically the same as above applies. It's harder to see how the hair falls naturally, and it takes the stylist longer to complete the service. Time + Product = Service cost.

Why are deposits required for specific stylists or services?

Some services require a large chunk of time of an artists day to be set aside, and oftentimes specific product needs to be purchased. This allows for the stylist to provide the expected service the guest wants, while also being compensated for the product they purchased to make it happen.

What service do I choose?

This depends on the specific hair artist and a number of other factors. For instance: Whitney's New Client Balayages start at Level 1 for shorter hair guests requesting minimal lightening. A Level 3 balayage is for longer hair guests wanting a cooler, or more blonde, balayage. Skye's New Client Blonding packages depend on the method of blonding, how much blonde is wanted, how blonde you wish to be, and whether the goal is vivids (which also require an add on service)

Maintenance appointments are for established guests only and are based on either starting hair canvas at appointment, length/density, and goal (Whitney). OR are based on which Level new client blonding package you originally received (Skye).

Why do new client appointments cost more?

New client services require longer consultations, more product usage, and a longer time allotment. Time + Product = Service Cost.

Why do I need to book a new client service first?

See above. They require a larger time commitment.

Can't I just book a maintenance appointment?

No, maintenance appointments are for established clients. New guests, and guests who are seen less then every 3 months, need to book a new guest appointment to account for the additional time and product needed to complete the services.
